Calderdale Relay

As defending titleholders I felt we owed it both to ourselves and to the event to field a complete team! This proved more challenging than ever this year. Unlike cricket a “12th man” is no option – without one there is no result. So my sincere thanks to Steve Jackson for stepping in at the 11th hour. And so it is, we have our place in the results of this year’s relay with a better than expected and very respectable 7th place from the 117 teams that set out in near darkness on leg 1.

My thanks to all who took part. Everyone enjoyed it, and that’s what it’s all about, so I keep telling myself. No official results yet, but our position was fairly consistent throughout the day.

The final relay of this season is the Pennine Bridleway Relay on Sunday 1st February, and I am sure we can do this event justice too.

A big thank you to everyone who made up the team for this years event. To those who were debutants, I hope you enjoyed the team spirit, the event but most of all, yourselves! After some swapping & changing, the team seemed to be sorted by Friday but then Saturday a call from my partner who had been struck down by flu. After frantically trying to find a female replacement, without success, it was either let an incomplete team run (not really wanting to waste the recce’ing efforts & arrangements made), cancel the whole thing or go for a male partner & change the team to a mixed squad. All that was needed was a male to run the last leg with me. I knew that both the men’s senior & vets team had been a hard task for the Captains’ to keep together so wasn’t too confident of what my success would be of finding an available runner. I also realised that it was a ‘big ask’ to ask someone at the drop of a hat to drive over to Halifax for a run out. Another alternative was to ask one of the runners from one of our male teams to do an extra 10 miles with me on top of whatever they’d already done. I asked Russ Maddams and without hesitation he said he’d do it, ‘no problem’. So, after his 9+ mile leg he by the skin of his teeth managed to get to Leg 6 to set us off just after the mass start. What an absolute star. He was a pleasure to run with, very encouraging and we all owe him a huge ‘thank you’ for saving the day. At the time of submitting this report, the results weren’t out, so I can’t say how we faired overall but the most important thing is that we all enjoyed ourselves.
