Great Whernside 4m/1555ft – Sat 31st Oct.
Just 3 Horwich runners travelled to Kettlewell in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, for the Great Whernside fell race. Not to be confused with Whernside, one of the Yorkshire 3 Peaks.
Glorious spring like weather greeted the 167 runners at the start and, whilst the summit was obscured by low cloud, route finding was never a problem over this classic out and back course, which never touches tarmac.
The race was won by John Hennegan (Pudsey & Bramley) in 30.45. Horwich finishers were: Graham Schofield 16th/2nd v50 36.03, Peter Leighton 79th 42.38 and Barry Chapman 104th 45.20. First lady/ u18 & 33rd overall, Melanie Hyder (Helm Hill) 37.53 looks like one to watch in the future. It took me half of the climb out to catch her!
Graham Schofield.
