Northern 5k Road Championship – Blackburn Sun 12th July
Bronze Medals for ‘Team Horwich’.
The format of having the 5k championship race incorporated within the open race was continued at Blackburn with the men’s team packing well and taking the bronze medals. James Kevan – who has been progressing well over the last couple of weeks – turned on the burner on the last lap of the three lap course for a super run, finishing 12th overall and 9th in the championship, running 15.40. Gary Priestley also broke the 16 min barrier with 15.47 for a huge PB in 14th overall and 11th in the championship; Gary paced the race well and remained strong throughout the race. Gareth Booth our third team counter started with real pace shadowing Matt Barnes from Altrincham – a sub 4 miler – Gareth ran his current PB on this course last year and was out to trim it back a little, but the early pace caught up with him a little later in the race and he had to settle for 16.05. Colin Rigby got a last minute entry and ran to support the team and do a little race speed work, his 21st overall and 16th in the championship was a credit to him and he got the 1st 0/40 time for his efforts. Alastair Murray was next in 25th overall and 19th in the championship; Ali worked hard throughout the race and was just 20 seconds short of his PB, running 16.27 – but he was hoping for a faster time. Karl Ward made up the club entry, Karl did not run in the championship race but finished well in the open race with a time of 17.45 for 46th place.
As you can see in the results we were just three places down on silver, from Salford, so well run everyone today, good result.
